Meet Your Mentor

Howdy all,

The first thing I want to say is welcome to the 2012-2013 school year at UWM  :)

My name is Ross Goessl and I'm a Junior studying Mechanical Engineering with a minor in Spanish.  AND, I'm very excited to be the MENTOR for the Science and Innovation House LLC!  What does this mean?  Well, the Science and Innovation House is a living learning community for students with a passion in the sciences and engineering to bond and grow together.  To sum it up, the students make it an awesome environment!

So what separates the Science and Innovation House LLC from the others?  Good question!  Most of the unique events that we come up with involve aspects of engineering and design build projects along with exposure to the different fields of engineering.

What are some of the events that the LLC will be hosting?  The top two events in my opinion are the Discovery World Robotics Program and The Engineering Olympics!  About 15 students will take part in a robot creation program at Discovery World where they will get to design and build Lego Mindstorm Robots!  Media will capture the students journey throughout the design build process and everyone will learn video/audio editing skills which will be used to create a video DVD program which everyone will get to take home.  My team's task was to create a robot that could mimic the exploding cucumber plant.  Imagine that!  It was very surprising to see how we came up with our ideas and how they all finally came together which makes me very excited to see what designs students come up with this year.

Now most of us just finished watching the summer Olympics in London and can only imagine the glory that comes with competing in them.  This could be a reality when you compete in our second Engineering Olympics!  The victors will have their names engraved on a plaque that will forever be enshrined in LLC history.  With events ranging from Tower and Bridge Building to the Egg Drop, were bound to see a multitude of engineering marvels.  Some will rise and some will fall, but there will be one Engineering Olympic Victor!  Will it be you?

And more details and events are yet to come! But don't worry, stay tuned here and I'll keep you updated.  That's it for now, but enjoy your first few weeks of classes, panther welcome week, and PANTHERFEST!

Your Mentor,

Ross
