March: International Diplomacy

For the month of March, the Beyond Borders LLC decided to go with the them of "International Diplomacy".  The first event to spearhead off this month was the Fireside Forum on Foreign Policy through the Center for International Education.  With the forum residents ware able to learn about some of the major international concepts and how they dealt into American politics.  Some of the concepts were immigration laws, sustainability efforts and other things.

The next event that took place was the United Nations Simulation in Cambridge Commons.  Each student  portrayed a country of their choice and became the United Nations for a couple of hours.  They also had to discuss and come up with a resolution about "Nuclear Armament and Non-Proliferation" dealing with reduction of nuclear power and weapons across the globe.  It was a enjoyable experience all around for the students.  They were able to use skills of cooperation, communication and their understanding parliamentary procedure to create an amazing resolution.

The students were also given the opportunity to participate in the Wisconsin High School Model United Nations at UW-Miwaukee as a facilitator.  Not all students were able to participate in WHSMUN due to running through spring break.  For the students that were able to facilitate, it was a great experience for them.  They were able to understand the other side of the United Nations while being chairs, vice chairs or rapporteur for committees or councils and helping high school students gain the understand of being a country.  Without the help of the students, WHSMUN would not have been as successful.

Engineering Olympics

The Science And Innovation House LLC would like to welcome you to the first ever ENGINEERING OLYMPICS this Wednesday night at 8pm! Tune in for lots of action and fun! :)

Parte 1 of the Engineering Olympics will be the EGG DROP!

We will pair everyone up into teams of 2 or 3. The first 5 minutes of the competition will be the design phase. Teams will have time to draw out their designs and collect their thoughts. After the 5 minutes are up, we will go into the 15 minute building phase. Paper, rubber bands, tape, card stock, paper clips, string, and other various supplies will be available, so any design is possible. After the 15 minute building period, we will test all the projects by dropping them from the second floor in the common area. Each team will receive points based on how their project performs and who has the most creative design.

We will record every team's point totals and the top three teams with the highest amount of points at the end of 4 weeks of competition, will be declared the winners. We are very excited about these events and will give updates whenever possible! Should give everyone a chance in the LLC to meet some new people and have some fun!

BRING ON THE ENGINEERING OLYMPICS!!!

And hopefully this doesn't happen to your team! Haha :)

Sincerely,

Mentor Ross

Art & Design Expo

On March 10th, the Art & Design LLC (along with the film and architecture LLCs) put held an expo at the Cambridge residence hall. All of the art & design students contributed a piece from their 3D Concepts class, where they had been working with paper. I had a great time, and hope everyone else did too. I definitely hope that this isn't the last expo this LLC holds! All of these photos were taken by Leah Schreiber (more can be found on the Art & Design LLC Facebook page).

ZOOOOOOO

This past Friday the ASL LLC and the Creating your future LLC took a trip to the Milwaukee Zoo. We took a very long public bus trip to the Zoo. We spent a few hours in the very barren zoo. Other than the wind it was very nice out. We had a lot of fun, but we all were very tired when the day was done. We learned some new animal signs and got to experience the zoo in a different way.

Cold/Snow vs. The Fearless Architecture Student

If you haven't spent much time in Milwaukee this winter, let me explain what it has been like. The temperature has been above average most days, usually hovering around the 40 degree mark. Snow? What is this snow you speak of? Milwaukee, snow? Not this winter. We have had hardly any snow and when it does fly, people are unaccustomed this year. So, with all that being said, the day we have planned to take our LLC downtown to sketch, it's COLD AND SNOWY!

The morning we were supposed to go downtown, Lucas (RA) and I had talked about whether or not we would still take the students if the snow let up. We discussed the possibilities of sitting inside and trying to sketch outside subjects... but in reality, it was just NOT a good day to go. We decided to post pone the sketching day and told the students we would need to reschedule. Upon receiving the email of the cancellation, 8 fearless architecture students challenged the discussion and still wanted to go out for the day and sketch. The weather ended up improving a bit, the snow gradually stopped, and Lucas ended up taking those 8 students downtown and the sketching day was saved!

We have some other great events in the works for the rest of the semester so stay tuned!
