April Leadership LLC Update

On April 6th 2012 a few LLC students and RA Dria attended the Asian Student Union (ASU) Multicultural Event in the Union Ballroom. This event exposed students to different types of dancing from all around the world such as: break dancing, hip-hop, belly dance, Bollywood, salsa, and even an interpretive dance to "I Believe I Can Fly"! On Saturday April 14th LLC students also participated in the annual Hunger Clean Up. It was hard for all of us to get up and be on campus by 8AM, but it was definitely worth it. After eating bagels and drinking coffee we were all powered up to make a difference! LLC students, RA Dria and I went to two different houses on the South side of Milwaukee to complete yard work. We mowed lawns, pulled weeds and added mulch to prepare gardens for the summer season. The senior residents really appreciated all of our hard work. The first week of May the Leadership LLC will be having a picnic and spend time engaging in leadership activities and conversations at Cambridge Commons!

Final Floor Meeting

We had our last floor meeting in the Honors LLC last night. *Tear* RA Kelly and I chatted with students about move-out and closing remarks for the year. I can't believe the semester is almost over. It has been such an incredible year. As Kelly just blogged, the students recently went to the Milwaukee Public Museum. From what I have heard, the students had a great time exploring the city and spending time together. Last week we also had our final Busy Student Relaxation Day. These seem to be a favorite among the LLC students as it is a great way to unwind from our hectic schedules.

In other news, RA Kelly and I have our final LLC Retreat this weekend where we will workshop on events from this year and begin planning for next year's LLC. I am happy to report that I will be returning as the Honors LLC Mentor. However, RA Kelly will be graduating :(. Shout out to her amazing work. She truly has been an incredible RA and is extremely devoted to the success of the LLC and all of the residents. Luckily though, the RA for next year is one of our current LLC residents! I'm really looking forward to a great year next year too.

Again, this year has been absolutely phenomenal working with the wonderful Honors LLC Residents. I couldn't have asked for a better group of students to work with and I am extremely grateful and humbled by their dedication to the LLC and to their success as students and UWM community members. Great work everyone and good luck in these last few weeks of the semester!

Day at the Museum

Some of our Honors House students braved the dangers of the dreaded "Friday the 13th" and ventured out to the Milwaukee Public Museum for a day of fun!

We had tons of fun exploring the Streets of Old Milwaukee...

Playing with the Butterflies and Bugs...

Lounging in the Arctic...

Trecking through the Rain Forest...

(not a afraid to mak a fool of myself)

Going back in time to see the Dinosaurs...

And going sooo many other places...

It was a great trip, especially for many of our students who had never been to the Milwaukee Public Museum before!!!

It is taking place on May 2nd at 6:00pm in the green room/flicks in Sandburg. If you can make it that would be awesome! There are free t-shirts and pins! Hope to see you all there.

CRAFT DAY!

Hey everyone!
We are having a craft day at Cambridge Commons in the 4th floor kitchen this THURSDAY APRIL 12. It will be at 8:00. We will be taking recycled materials and making them into new and trendy objects. You could make anything from a new outfit to a lamp. Bring some interesting materials if you have them, otherwise there will be some old bottle, cans, string, fabric, and other items to use at the event. Hope to see you there!

Hello everyone!

Last weekend, the students in the art & design LLCs installed some of their art by the Beer Line Trail bike path by Riverview. I was unable to attend, but here are some pictures from the students and faculty.

Having A Blast!

This semester we've had some really awesome events so far.  Celia talked about the round table discussion we had with a few individuals from campus resources, but we had a couple other great events!

First of all a few of the residents participated in the Rec'd Olympics at the Union Recreation Center with some of the FYC staff and it was a ton of fun.  We were able to bowl, shoot some pool, and play ping pong with the drunk goggles on.  There were even a couple of officers from the UWM Police Department there and it was fun being able to talk with them and even see one of the officers try the goggles on.

This is Jon, Wes, and Celia by the penguin enclosure.  It was a little cold for us, but definitely just right for the penguins!
Then, not too long ago, we were able to go on a trip with the American Sign Language LLC to the zoo!  This was probably my favorite event all year; we got to see the animals and learn some animal names in sign language!  (My favorite was definitely the sign for "lion.")  It was a really great opportunity for everyone involved to meet new people and learn something from one another.
Here are some students by the gorilla enclosure!

This month in RiverView we have a lot of awesome events coming up as well.  So far we've got a RiverView vs. Cambridge football or soccer game in the works, a Traveling Taco Tuesday, and a trip to Gordon park to hang out and join the weather.  Other than that, I just hope everyone has a great semester and finishes the year strong!

Pick Your Classes Day! (Almost)

Hi Everyone,

Today in the Honors LLC we are having a "Pick Your Classes" event to help the LLC students choose classes for next semester. I can't believe we are already picking classes for the fall. Time flies! Deciding which classes to take can be really stressful especially if you aren't sure what your major is but hopefully with the help of myself and RA Kelly, we can minimize the stress! Choosing classes should be a fun opportunity to try something new, further explore an interest, or simply get one step closer to graduation! It should be a fun time bonding and prepping for our next academic year.

In other news, on April 18th, we have another Busy Student Relaxation Day. These are such fun days. We turn off all the lights, play relaxing music, and put our homework away for a few hours. It's a great way to find a little peace in the middle of our busy lives. Also coming up is our trip to the Milwaukee Public Museum on April 13th. Our trip to Discovery World last semester was a huge success so we can't wait to explore the city of Milwaukee together again in a few weeks.

Well, that's all for now. We have a lot of great events to look forward to in the final weeks of the semester.

Job/Internship Hunting

It's not the easiest thing to do but leave it to the First Year Center to give you a helping hand! We've got an event coming up in mid-April that will help you better organize your obligations and get you rolling with some more effective time management. My team here truly feels that a campus job is a great way to better manage your time as they are always understanding of your scholarly obligations. Stop by our table in the Bolton Breezeway on April 17th, 18th & 19th between 10AM & 2PM to get more information on campus opportunities or just techniques to fine tune your organizational and time management methods! Whether you're looking for something now, this summer, or even next year, let's figure out exactly what it is you're looking for and draw up a road map of how we can make it happen!

Keep up the great work and be sure to put your best foot forward to finish this academic year knowing that you exerted your fullest potential! Summer's right around the corner folks, hang in there!
