Meet Your RA

I am so excited for this school year to start! My name is Bridget Vander Zanden and I am the 2012-2013 Resident Assistant for the Creating Your Future: Exploring Majors and Career Directions LLC.  I am from De Pere WI, which is very close to Green Bay.  GO PACK GO!

I am entering my fifth year here at UWM.  I am a Pre-Dental student majoring in Biological Sciences and minoring in Communication and Chemistry.  This year will bring forth many new challenges, allowing us to grow as individuals.  I am looking forward to get to know all the members of the Creating Your Future LLC!

Meet Your Mentor

Hi All!

My name is Brianna Quade and I am currently a junior here, majoring in history and sociology with a certificate in ethnic studies!  I was born and raised in Milwaukee and lived on campus for my first two years here. I will be mentoring the Writing and Visual Cultural LLC. I am very excited about this opportunity to make an impact on students.  My LLC is aimed towards helping students improve their writing and seek a new cultural view. This is my first time working with an LLC, so it should be interesting.  I have worked hard in my English classes, which is why I was given the opportunity to work with this LLC.  I hope to show students the benefit of putting forth good work in writing to improve that skill.

Meet Your RA

Hello everyone!

I hope you are all exited about a new year and ready to get started. My name is Angelica Sanchez and I will be the RA for the Environmental Sustainability & Biology-Mathematics LLC . I am originally from Guadalajara, Mexico but now I leave in Green Bay, WI with my family. This will be my third year at UW-Milwaukee and I’m still loving it like the first time. I am currently a CES major with a General Business and Spanish minor. I am very passionate about this LLC because I truly see the its potential as a program and most importantly, as a group of individuals.

The Environmental Sustainability & Biology-Mathematics LLC is all about getting involved and finding ways to conserve our natural environment while keeping it fun and interesting for everyone. We will be working on various events and activities on and off campus that will help us get a better understanding on how to be a more sustainable campus and individuals. Expect to be challenged at times and get ready to be part of a great group of individuals with similar interests and an even greater community!

P.S. the picture was taken on a trail close to campus...just a sneak peek!

Meet Your Mentor

Hello Explorers!

My name is Alex Riehle and I will be the student mentor helping you explore the world of possible majors and careers.  I have always been an adventurous person and I like to try new things. When I first came to UWM I was undecided about my major too. I tried everything from Business Administration to Art History, before finally deciding on an Education major.

Now, I am a Senior studying Early Childhood Education. I work at the Student Success Center as student mentor, mainly for students with undecided majors. I have also worked as a Resident Assistant for University Housing and mentored students enrolled in Education Psychology 101: Planning Your Majors/Careers courses.

When I am not in school or at work, I am out exploring the wonders of Milwaukee. I love this city mainly because there’s always something new to try. I enjoy going to the local festivals and spending time at the Bradford Beach.

In this LLC we will learn to indentify our own interests, values, and skills in order to pick a possible major or career path.  I look forward to exploring with you!

Meet your RA

Hi Everyone!

I'd just like to start by saying that I'm excited for this upcoming school year and all the fun things that entail! I look foward to meeting my residents and working with my LLC team to create awesome events as well. Well now I suppose it's time for a little bit about myself! My name is Mikel McGee, (my name is pronounce my-kel just incase you were wondering). I am the RA for the Writing and Visual Cultures LLC for the 2012-2013 school year. I'm from Milwaukee Wisconsin and am familiar with the town as I live just a short drive from the UWM campus. I suppose in academic standing I would be considered a junior but due to transfering schools I am considered a sophmore in my program. I am a Communication Sciences and Disorders major or as some people may know it Speech Pathology.

Unlike a lot of students coming into college for the first time I knew what my major was right away; however, I still have taken a lot of required gen ed classes like English. I always have liked English and have found that once I get a topic in mind and brainstorm some ideas writing comes easy to me. My goal for this year in my LLC and on my floor in particular is  to be a resource for my residents and take the fear out of being assigned a research paper. I know that hearing in English 101 that your final grade determining paper will be a 10 page research paper can be daunting!

Meet Your RA

Hello everyone!

I hope you are all exited about a new year and ready to get started. My name is Angelica Sanchez and I will be the RA for the Lab Rats: Undergraduate Research LLC . I am originally from Guadalajara, Mexico but now I leave in Green Bay, WI with my family. This will be my third year at UW-Milwaukee and I’m still loving it like the first time. I am currently a CES major with a General Business and Spanish minor. I am very exited about this LLC and I’m ready to get going.

The Lab Rats: Undergraduate Research LLC is all about getting hands on experience on how the culture of research works at UW-Milwaukee. Students will gain various skills that not will facilitate the research programs to them but general life skills. Expect to be challenged at times and be ready to be part of a great group of individuals with similar interest and an even greater community!

Meet Your RA

Hey All You Covenant Scholars!

I hope summer is winding down nicely for you. My name is McKenzie Pickett, and I will be your RA this year. I love to be active and hope you are ready to be as well. Some of the activities I like to do are kayaking, swimming, rock climbing, zumba, sports in general, volunteering, reading... if I have time..., meeting new people, going on adventures, and most things spontaneously. I cannot wait to meet all of you. Please have some ideas about what you want to do for fun this year i.e. tour around Milwaukee, fly kites as a group, etc. (You all can be way more creative than that I am sure.)

If you are not really sure what you signed up for with the Wisconsin Covenant LLC, here is what the LLC website says "The purpose of the Wisconsin Covenant Scholars LLC is to help students develop leadership skills through participation in campus activities, community service opportunities, peer, and co-curricular interactions. We want Covenant Scholars to develop a sense of belonging to the university through these types of connections. We believe that students that are engaged in a variety of activities while in school can and will experience higher academic achievement and a higher level of satisfaction."    In being a scholar, the cliff notes version of this is get ready to have fun while developing yourself and our community.

See you soon!!!

Meet Your RA

Hey, everyone! My name is Melissa Christine Badertscher, but you can call me Chris. I am the Resident Assistant with the Art & Design Living Learning Community in Riverview.

I grew up in the town of Waukesha, WI, not too far away, yet very different from Milwaukee. It took me a while to adjust to city life, but I have grown to love Milwaukee and the UW-Milwaukee campus even more than when I started. I am just beginning my second year at UWM. I am majoring in both Art & Design and Psychology and have a minor in Spanish. I hope to eventually earn a Master's Degree in Art Therapy.

Working with an LLC is going to be an amazing learning experience for me and I hope that the residents can learn as much from me as I can from them. Our Art & Design LLC is going to be an amazing community with a variety of talents, and I am looking forward to getting to know each and every resident this year. We will all be taking a 2D Concepts course together and will have the great opportunity to work together and explore and create art of our own in the community. I am so excited to meet each and every one of you and together we will make this a great year!

Meet Your RA

Hello, my name is Emily Bowlin.  I grew up and have lived most of my life in Pewaukee, WI.  This year I will be a sophomore.  I am working towards a double degree in Dance and Accounting.  This fall I will also be starting the Honors College.
I am in charge of the Dance LLC.  I was in this community last year and really enjoyed it.  My favorite activity was attending the Milwaukee Ballet's performance of Dracula!  I hope to expose you all to a variety of dance styles, including some Salsa!  It will be fun to learn and explore the diversity of dance. I hope you all have as much fun as I did last year.  It was a great experience that I can't wait to share!

Meet Your Mentor

Welcome to UWM!

Hello, my lovely Lab Rats! My name is Rea Mae Azcueta, and I will be your Lab Rats LLC Mentor for the 2012-2013 school year. I was born and raised in Bayside, WI, which is a suburb of Milwaukee, and I graduated from Divine Savior Holy Angels High School (an all girl school) in Milwaukee.
In the fall, I will be a Junior in the Biology/Pre-med program here at UWM. Originally, I was a nursing student, but I switched to pre-med after my freshman year. My plan after I graduation is to do a year of research so that I can get more experience in a research lab before I attend Medical school. Since I love working with children and patients, I plan on becoming a pediatrician. Throughout my college career, I have been involved on campus by being an Asian Student Union e-board member, a New Student Orientation Leader, a First Year Mentor.

Last summer, I was accepted into the Community Health Internship Program and became an intern at the Milwaukee Health Department in the Vital Statistics department. I analyzed and created a report that shows the top five causes of death in the City of Milwaukee by age group and by race from 1997-2008. My experience at the MHD sparked my interest in research, which lead me to becoming a Lab Rats mentor.

The Lab Rats LLC is designed for students who are interested in doing any kind of research during their undergraduate career. The students in the LLC will attend a class together, go on different field trips, and attend different events that are related to research. You will also learn about the different research labs we have on and around campus as well as the hundreds of different research programs UWM has to offer. As your mentor, I want to help you find the best fitting research project for you so that you can experience how awesome research can be. By the end of your first semester, you will be aware of multiple different research projects on campus, and hopefully, you will be apart of one of them.

This is my first time being a mentor for an LLC, but I have lots of fun activities and field trips in mind. If you ever have any ideas or activities we should do, feel free to contact me at, and I'd be happy to incorporate them into our year!

I'm looking forward to meeting all of you in the Fall!

Rea Mae Azcueta

Meet Your Mentor

Hey there! My name is Rhiannon Urbanowski and I am a mentor this fall for the Art & Design Living Learning Communities in both Cambridge and Riverview. This is my first year being a Mentor so I am super excited to get to work with Art students just like myself. I am going into my Junior year in the Peck School of the Arts studying Graphic Design. I've switched my major twice but I finally feel like the Peck School is where I am supposed to be. It is such a tight-knit community of wonderful, creative, and inspirational people that I am lucky to consider myself a part of.

This upcoming semester we have a ton of stuff planned for the Art & Design LLC. I know one of the big ones is a public wall mural which sounds like a blast! We will also have mini trips throughout the semester to various galleries and the Milwaukee Art Museum (which as Peck Students you will all get a free pass to).

I know I participated in a LLC when I got to UWM because it sounded like a fun way to get involved and meet people with some of the same interests as me. I was in the Global Studies LLC in Sandburg hall and our community grew very close over the course of the school year. A lot of the people you are meeting and living with now will be people you can count on for the rest of your college career if not even the rest of your life.

This is going to be a fantastic year and I am so excited to be able to be a part of the Art & Design LLC!

Meet Your Mentor

Hey everyone! My name is Maggie Iken and I will be the mentor for the music LLC this year. Although I am currently majoring in Russian, I was a music major for my first three semesters at UWM. I continue to participate in music events on campus as well. Last year over spring break, I was able to travel to New York with the UWM Symphony Orchestra and perform at Carnegie Hall! I can be frequently seen playing for composition students and have played for the theater department as well. I will be a junior this fall and am originally from Green Bay (go Pack!).

I am extremely excited to be working with the music LLC this year. When I was a freshman living in the residence halls, I wanted to be involved in an LLC pertaining to music, but at that time they didn't have one. I'm thrilled that even though I am no longer a resident, I am able to participate in something that I wanted so badly a couple years ago. I can't wait to start off the year and work with a bunch of individuals who share a passion for music.

Meet Your Mentor

Hello All!

My name is Tyler and I will be acting as the Mentor for the Bio-Math/Environmental Sustainability LLC. Just to give you some quick facts about me, I am a Junior double majoring in Biology and Biochemistry; Also I'm working on a Mathematics minor. I'm from Racine, WI but I have lived in Milwaukee since my freshman year here at UW-Milwaukee. Just to give you all some info on the Environmental Sustainability and Biology-Mathematics LLC, it is for students who are interested in environmental science and/or combining mathematics with biology. Further the whole goal of this LLC is to the participants how to take biology-mathematics approaches to environmental issues.  The reason as to why I'm involved in the LLC is that I am also a participant in the UBM program, a Bio-Math research program.

Anyway that's all I have for now, but I can't wait until I am able to meet you all!

Meet Your Mentor

My name is Nick and I am the mentor for the Transfer Community LLC.  The Purpose of the LLC is to create a community where new transfers to UWM can share their experiences, learn about UWM, and network with other students in similar situations.  Although it is not technically an LLC because there is no class required for the community, there will still be a dedicated RA as well as myself to plan events tailored to the students.
A little about myself.  My hometown is Delafield, WI, but since high school I have lived in San Diego, North Chicago, and am proud to be a current resident of Milwaukee.  I'm currently a junior at UW-M; I'm starting my second year here after completing three semesters at UW-Parkside in Kenosha, and I'm hoping to finish a degree in chemistry very soon.

Meet Your RA

Hello All,

My name is Bethany Fuller and I will be the RA (Residential Assistant) for the LLC of transfer students.  I'm from Faribault, Minnesota which for those of you who may not know where that is, is an hour south of the Twin Cities.  Here at Milwaukee I'm in my second year of Graduate School and I hope to be finishing up this year.  I'm going for my masters in Library Science with my concentration in archives.  My undergrad was at St. Cloud State University.
This LLC is to help transfer students become familiar with with UWM campus and Milwaukee through different resources and events.  Working with this LLC is new for me because I have never down something like this before, but I look forward to learning with you all.  I can related to this community because I myself just spent last year familiarizing myself with Milwaukee having never been here before.  There are still things that I am learning, but I hope to help you as you are adjusting to this new environment.

Meet Your RA

Hi everyone, my name is Michael Ameel! I am a sophomore here at the beautiful University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. My hometown is about 45 minutes away in the growing city of Waukesha. My major is Communications with a minor in Business. Last semester I was on an internship with The Walt Disney Company that has taught me a whole bunch about the business world and communications. In addition to being an RA I am a Campus Representative for the Disney College Program!

I am the RA for the Business Panthers Learning Living Community in Sandburg North Tower floor 12! I believe that the living learning community is essential for incoming freshman to get involved with because, if you have a passion for something like Business, Dance, Film and/or so many other awesome careers or aspirations, and we have an LLC for you and your peers, what's not a better place to collaborate and learn together than the residence halls?

As I mentioned earlier I am the RA for the Business Panthers LLC in Sandburg North Tower floor 12. I am very excited to meet with residents living in the Business Panthers LLC because we have a lot planned including a tour of a too-exciting-to-announce company in Downtown Milwaukee! (Heads up Business Panthers!) Furthermore, I am looking forward to meeting all of you on campus!

P.S. Don’t be afraid to say "hi" if you see me on campus or in the residence halls!! Take care!

Meet Your Mentor

Welcome to UWM!

Hey! My name is Brian Lloyd and I am originally from Algonquin, Illinois, which is about two hours away from Milwaukee. I will be starting my senior year this fall and I am double majoring in Marketing and Psychology. I have been a Mentor and Orientation Leader for the past two years, but this will be my first year working with the Business Panthers LLC.

Throughout my years at UWM, I have been involved with the Business Scholars Program and volunteered with Habitat for Humanity. I am also involved with undergraduate research on projects relating to health communications and have interned at Columbia St. Mary’s Hospital and the City of Milwaukee Health Department. In the future, I hope to attend graduate school and pursue a career in healthcare policy and management. I currently live with two of my friends in an apartment near campus and I have really enjoyed my experience at UWM so far!

I am excited to work with the Business Panthers LLC and meet all of you! This is a great opportunity to develop closer relationships with your peers and faculty members. We are planning a lot of great events for this semester and I can’t wait to meet you!

Enjoy the rest of your summer and see you soon!

Meet Your RA

My name is Sara Fritchen and I was born and raised in Racine, Wisconsin. I am currently a sophomore in the Peck School of the Arts. I have two majors, Multiple Woodwinds and Jazz Studies and am considering a minor in business. I am very excited to be part of this Learning Living Community. The Music LLC is going to be a great way for musicians to become a community and support each other’s performances, creations, and opinions. My goals for the residents in this house are to  keep an open mind about music, discover new creative outlets, and create a network of musicians that they can utilize in the future. I am involved in this community because of my passion for music and helping others. I also have experience from my other job assisting UWM’s jazz professor, Curt Hanrahan, with our jazz band and youth jazz program, otherwise known as UJAY. I mostly organize music, make lots of copies, herd students, and set up equipment for concerts.

About Your Mentor

Welcome to UW-Milwaukee!

Hey Everyone!

I'm Amber Rivard. I am from Brookfield, Wisconsin which is about 20 minutes west of Milwaukee. I am a junior in standing pursuing a degree in Human Resources Management with a Leadership Certificate. I am also a part of the UWM Emerging Leaders Program, ALPFA business organization and Ahora! Latin Dance Organization on campus! This year I will be the mentor for 3 LLCs; Dance Foundations, Community Leadership and WI Covenant.

The Dance Foundation LLC's purpose is to provide students with a connection to Milwaukee's culture of dance as well as allow students to create new relationships with other students who share the same passion of dance. This is my first year as the mentor of the Dance Foundations LLC! I chose to be the mentor for this LLC because dance has been a part of my life for 12 years and has always been a passion of mine. I can't wait to see what this year has to offer to these students. I look forward to meeting them at the end of this month. RA Emily and I plan to kick off the semester with an exposure to the different types of latin dance and its culture!

The purpose of the WI Covenant Scholars LLC is to allow students to feel connected to UWM through different activities and networking opportunities. This LLC focuses on providing students with opportunities to develop and strengthen their leadership skills as well as earn high academic achievements. This LLC will be attending the same class and working closely with the Community Leadership LLC. This LLC focuses on providing students with opportunities to develop their leadership skills as well via volunteer work, acquiring leadership roles and  participating in community activities.

I was a part of the Community Leadership LLC as a freshman and really enjoyed it! I learned a lot about what it mean to be involved in a community and how to take action when you want to see a change take place. My LLC worked hard to bring computers, an ATM, colored walls and printers to the RiverView residence hall in 2010. This will be my second year as the mentor for the Community Leadership LLC.

Meet Your Mentor

Howdy all,

The first thing I want to say is welcome to the 2012-2013 school year at UWM  :)

My name is Ross Goessl and I'm a Junior studying Mechanical Engineering with a minor in Spanish.  AND, I'm very excited to be the MENTOR for the Science and Innovation House LLC!  What does this mean?  Well, the Science and Innovation House is a living learning community for students with a passion in the sciences and engineering to bond and grow together.  To sum it up, the students make it an awesome environment!

So what separates the Science and Innovation House LLC from the others?  Good question!  Most of the unique events that we come up with involve aspects of engineering and design build projects along with exposure to the different fields of engineering.

What are some of the events that the LLC will be hosting?  The top two events in my opinion are the Discovery World Robotics Program and The Engineering Olympics!  About 15 students will take part in a robot creation program at Discovery World where they will get to design and build Lego Mindstorm Robots!  Media will capture the students journey throughout the design build process and everyone will learn video/audio editing skills which will be used to create a video DVD program which everyone will get to take home.  My team's task was to create a robot that could mimic the exploding cucumber plant.  Imagine that!  It was very surprising to see how we came up with our ideas and how they all finally came together which makes me very excited to see what designs students come up with this year.

Now most of us just finished watching the summer Olympics in London and can only imagine the glory that comes with competing in them.  This could be a reality when you compete in our second Engineering Olympics!  The victors will have their names engraved on a plaque that will forever be enshrined in LLC history.  With events ranging from Tower and Bridge Building to the Egg Drop, were bound to see a multitude of engineering marvels.  Some will rise and some will fall, but there will be one Engineering Olympic Victor!  Will it be you?

And more details and events are yet to come! But don't worry, stay tuned here and I'll keep you updated.  That's it for now, but enjoy your first few weeks of classes, panther welcome week, and PANTHERFEST!

Your Mentor,

Meet your Mentor

Hey guys, my name is Ben Wenzel and I will be your mentor for 2012-2013 academic year. I hail from Kaukauna, Wisconsin, which is about 30 minutes away from Green Bay and 2 hours from Milwaukee. Since I was born deaf, I went to Green Bay Southwest High School because my home school district does not provide deaf program. I graduated from Southwest High School during summer of 2011. Grew up near Green Bay, it is not a surprise that I am a Cheesehead, or a hardcore fan of Green Bay Packers. I am also a fan of Brewers even though the team played poorly this year.

American Sign Language LLC from last year
I am a sophomore at University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Currently, I haven't decided on a major. It is difficult to choose from so many different kinds of majors. I lived at the American Sign Language LLC last year, and it was a blast. I want to contribute more to the LLC, so I decided to become an American Sign Language LLC mentor for this coming fall. I want to make the upcoming freshmen to have the best first impression toward University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and have fun living at American Sign Language LLC like I did last year!

If you guys have any question about LLC or just in general about University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, please feel free to contract me at Let make 2012-2013 an awesome year!

Meet Your RA

Hey guys! My name is Alec James Just and I will be in the Business Panthers Community on the 10th floor of North tower. I am a Human Resources and Finance Major from Racine, Wisconsin. This will be my second year at UWM.

I am really looking forward to being in the Business Panthers even though it will be my first experience with a Learning Living Community. I really enjoy being apart of the Business school here and being able to connect business students in the dorms is just a bonus for me. I have been a business major since I started here at UWM. I look forward to helping any of my students in any way that I can.

Meet Your RA

Hello Architecture LLC 2012-2013! My name is Brenna Nelson and I'll be your Resident Assistant for this year. I grew up in Owatonna, Minnesota. I know what you're thinking and yes, I do have a Minnesotan accent! I am currently a sophomore here at UWM. As a freshman I was an architecture student but I am now a Conservation and Environmental Science major.

I'm looking forward to making living in the Architecture Living Learning Community an awesome experience this year! The LLC is primarily for architecture students here at UWM but there will be a few non-architecture students in our community as well. I was really excited when I got placed in the Architecture LLC because of my experience last year in the program. Architecture has always been a passion of mine and  even though it is no longer my major, it is still something I enjoy learning about. I hope to help all of you experience architecture in new ways as you explore it in your first year classes as well as in the beautiful city of Milwaukee!

Meet Your Mentor

New Season, New Beginning!

Hey everyone! My name is Ashley McDermott and I'm going to be your mentor for the 2012-2013 school year. I live out of state in Illinois (I'm still a Packers fan!! Don't worry!) in a town called Schaumburg. You might have heard of it, especially if you love to shop, because Woodfield Mall is located right in the center of the town. This year I'm going to a second year student or a sophomore.

I am currently a pre-nursing student in the College of Nursing, but I will be applying for the professional program this upcoming year.  Nursing is extremely important to me and I'm very passionate about it. I became a nursing major due to the unfortunate health care of my family. When I was younger my mother had over 15 surgeries. I would visit her after school until I had to go to sleep at home and I watched the nurses do everything they could to make my mom and I comfortable. Being so young and seeing my mom so sick caused a lot of sadness for me; but, the nurses that took care of my mom made everything a little brighter. They did everything they could to make my mom comfortable and to make me smile. As i got older and realized how the nurses made a bad situation seem not so horrible for me, I realized I wanted to be able to do the same thing for other people. Therefore, I became a nursing major and am hoping to work in the emergency department. I want to work in the E.D. because the people that are coming in there to see me are, for the most part, having the worst day of their lives. I want to be able to make scary times for patients and families seem not so scary all while saving the patients life.

The Helping Hands in Healthcare LLC is an amazing community within University Housing  that allows all healthcare majors to live together. The students who chose to live here are at a huge advantage! They are living around people who are all going through the same things; especially since everyone will be taking at least one of the same classes. Healthcare classes can get extremely stressful, especially things like A&P, but having everyone you are surrounded by going through the same emotions makes it easier. Besides, they say that the best way to learn something is to reteach it. By living on the LLC floor you can go to the people surrounding you and ask if they understood a specific unit that you don't. By them explaining it to you, they are studying by reenforcing their memory of the unit and you are learning by listening to the unit described in a new way.
Assignment from Nursing Seminar
to explore Milwaukee with other
nursing students (I'm on the left front)!

I became involved in the Helping Hands in Healthcare LLC because I want to be able to guide students and offer new ideas to them on how to further their experience with healthcare. Since freshman year I've learned about a lot of resources, internships, volunteer work, clubs, and even more that are great places to become involved in as a healthcare major. As anyone going into healthcare knows, the big thing to getting hired is EXPERIENCE! Getting involved with things on and off campus that involve healthcare will get the experience part of your resume off to a good start.

This is my first experience with the Helping Hands in Healthcare LLC.  Now looking back I would have loved to live in this LLC last year. Since I didn't get to, I want to be able to make your experience living here the best it can be! My goal is to get you guys (even more) excited about your major! I am looking forward to planning some really fun and out of the box events. I want everyone living on the Helping Hands in Healthcare LLC to leave at the end of spring semester with memories that they will never forget.

I am so excited to meet all of you and to start off the fall semester! (:
Ashley McDermott

Meet Your RA

Hello!  My name is Leah Hoffman, and I am the RA for the ASL LLC for the 2012-2013 school year.  I am from Green Bay, Wisconsin, so naturally I love the Packers!  This year I will be a junior or third year student.  I am double majoring in ASL (American Sign Language) Studies and the ASL Interpreter Training Program.

I was introduced to sign language in kindergarten and then once again in middle school.  When I entered high school, I took ASL as a foreign language.  That is where I decided (with the help and encouragement of my parents, ASL teachers, and interpreters) that I wanted to pursue ASL as a major/career.

The ASL LLC is a community within University Housing that allows ASL students to live amongst each other.  Students who are Deaf, majoring, minoring, or fulfilling their foreign language requirements can choose to live in the LLC.  It is a great place to not only introduce you to the language and Deaf culture, but also immerse yourself, and learn more!  After all, immersing yourself is the best way to learn a language.  I lived in the ASL LLC as a resident my first two years, and I loved it so much that I decided to apply to be the RA.  My goal is to spread more awareness throughout University Housing about Deaf culture.  I am super excited for this coming year, and I can’t wait to meet my residents!

Meet Your Mentor

Welcome to UWM everyone!

My name is Taylor Ziegler and I will be your mentor!!
I am originally from Wausau Wisconsin which is about 3 hours away form the Milwaukee area I attended DC Everest Senior High School!  This coming fall I will be a senior in the Lubar school of Business.  I am a double major in Marketing and Human Resource Management.  I am currently an intern at Harley Davidson in the Human Resource Department.  I work with Parts and Accessories as well as General merchandise.  It has been an amazing experience so far! Over the course of my college career I was a New Student Orientation Leader, Freshmen Edge Coach, and mentor.  I also volunteered with Big Brothers Big sisters as well as the volunteer department at UWM. Last winter break I studied abroad in Europe.  I spent 2 1/2 weeks traveling to 5 countries and 7 cities.  I was in Vienna Budapest Prague Berlin, as well as smaller cities along the way.  It was truly one of the best parts of my college experience thus far!    I currently live with 4 other girls in a house near campus it has been a great way to enjoy my college experience!

I became involved in the Business Panthers LLC becasue I wanted to help guide students with their business careers as early as possible.  The sooner students begin building their resumes and gain business experience the greater the opportunities will be throughout college.

The Business Panthers LLC is designed to give students the chance to work closely with one and other while living in the residents halls.  The students in the LLC will be taking a class together as well as attending business related events throughout the semester.  This is a huge networking opportunity for each student in the LLC.  There will be more specific information to come!

This is my first year working with an LLC so I look forward to developing new events and continuing to make the Business Pathners a top notch LLC.

I look forward to starting the fall semester!
Thank you

Meet Your Mentor

Hey everybody! My name is Nikole Rude or Nikki for short. I am from Fond du Lac, Wisconsin but now live here in good old Milwaukee. This is going to be my fourth year here at UWM and I am majoring in Kinesiology pre-Physical Therapy. This is going to my my second year working with the Helping Hands in Healthcare LLC. Once I learned what an LLC was last year and after working with them for a year now, I really wish I would have been involved in one my freshmen year and love getting my students involved. Can't wait to meet all of you during Panther Welcome Week!

Meet Your Mentor

Hi folks!

Can you believe that the fall semester is here already? Where did summer go? Thank goodness we have a million awesome things at UWM to look forward to...makes summer ending much better. For those of you who might not know me, my name is Molly and I am returning this year as the Honors Living Learning Community mentor. I can't wait to start another year with the awesome Honors students. We had a blast year in the LLC going to Discovery World, hanging out with Dr. Schuster and the other Honors professors, and enjoying our Student Relaxation Days. As we approach this upcoming year, I'm looking forward to planning many more fun (and Honors related!) events. I'm hoping to find some way to incorporate Persepolis, the common read, into an event or at least a discussion out in our house's common room on the 2nd floor of West Tower. For any readers who aren't in the Honors House LLC but happen to be first year Honors students, we have the Honors College Orientation coming up during welcome week. You should have received letters in the mail as reminders and we also have been mentioning it at every New Student Orientation, so don't forget! That orientation is a great way to meet students and your future professors as well as win great prizes (aka gift cards, Bucks/Brewers/Panther swag and all sorts of other great stuff!). Make sure to mark your calenders if you are an Honors College student! Speaking of Fall Welcome, there will be TONS of great events for all first year students. Free food and fun events all while getting to meet faculty, your First Year Mentor annnnnnnd other first year students. It's like one big UWM celebration to welcome you to campus. You better not forget! Well, I think that's all I have for now.  I can't wait for move in so I can meet all of the new students and hang out during Fall Welcome.

Til then,
Go Panthers!

Meet Your Mentor

.::Mentor Meredith::.

I studied abroad in Prague, Czech Republic this summer.

So a little about me :) I was born in Santa Fe, New Mexico and have spent most of my time growing up in the Southwest even after I had made the move to Wisconsin in 1999. I love the culture, food and art that comes from the Southwest and will always keep that with me wherever I go. I spent my first two years of college at the University of North Carolina- Asheville and had the pleasure to wake up and enjoy the blue
ridge parkway as my backyard. I love hiking and being outdoors!!

I transferred to UWM last fall and am studying Marketing and Sales at the Lubar Business School.   I am a mentor at the Student Success Center and wanted to learn more about the film industry. I am excited to be working with this LLC focused on Film, Video and New Genre. I have loved watching movies and understanding the art that goes along with layouts, lighting, sound and acting. I can't wait to learn more about films and everything that goes along with it! I have no experience with the Living Learning Community since I am a transfer student from the University of North Carolina-Asheville. As a freshman I had the opportunity to sign up for a similar program called the Integrative Liberal Studies Program,  that focused on helping incoming freshmen get acclimated into college life. This program was very detrimental to the development of lasting friendships that I still have today with peers and professors. I learned and enjoyed this course so much and hope that I can help with others have a similar experience.

Meet Your RA

Oh hello incoming residents of the Film, Video, Animation, and New Genres LLC,

My name is Brian and I am your Resident Assistant.   I am a fourth year student studying Film with an emphasis in Direction.  I have an Associate’s Degree from UW-Baraboo/Sauk County and have study abroad experience (Scotland).

This LLC experience is catered towards students with an interest in Film, whether they intend it to be their major or not.  Our goal is to make the transition to UW-Milwaukee an enjoyable experience and to encourage all residents to follow their passions.  We will do this through planned activities and classes catered towards community development (both with pre-film majors and those in other majors) while simultaneously assisting with our residents' environmental adaptation.  All members will take a class together, will live in the same hall, will be given chances to make collaborative film productions, and will have opportunities to explore the rich developing film community that Milwaukee has been continuously developing.

I personally joined the LLC when I first came to UW-Milwaukee last year as a transfer student.  I only stayed for a semester, as I joined the RA staff shortly after arriving but have continued to stay in touch and work with the friends I made during that time.  When I was offered the chance to fill the vacant RA opening this year I was more than elated to accept.  My passion for film has been life-long and the only thing I enjoy more than making them is helping others begin to do the same.  I look forward to meeting each and every one of you.

Meet Your RA

Hometown: Maplewood, MN (Suburb of St. Paul)
Year: Second year student
Major: Art and Design, double focus in Painting/Drawing and Ceramics

Art and Design LLC - What it's all about?: The Art and Design LLC is for art majors looking to be in a community of other art majors. You are literally surrounded by other art students. Your suite mates and others on your floor, and in this case even your RA, are all art majors. All of the students take two foundations art classes together - 2D Concepts and 3D Concepts. By being in the LLC you make instant connections with your peers and faculty. You can form support groups, make great friends and really connect to the campus in a unique way.

I was in the Art and Design LLC in Cambridge my freshman year. I loved it because I immediately made friends who could support me through the year and were going through the same things I was. I didn't have to search for them because they lived next door! I also felt like I had a closer, more personal relationship with the professors of my LLC than those teaching my non LLC classes. You stay with the same professor for two semesters so you really get to know them and they get to know you, allowing them to learn your strengths and challenge you where you need it. I loved the LLC so much that I decided to take the position this year so I can give the new first year students the great experience I had.

I feel like I can really be a benefit to the first year students because I was them last year. I know what they're going through, the projects they've done, what the teachers expect and some of the problems they might encounter. Also by simply having my first year of college under my belt I have many college life experiences not related to art as well to help guide the students to be successful.

Things to do

Milwaukee Art Museum (MAM):
Take bus 10 (toward Bluemound and Brookfield) from corner of Humboldt and North
Get off at Prospect and Mason and walk to MAM

Beans and Barley:
A great place to look at funky knik-knacks and eat some unique organic goodies (pies and cookies!)
If you're facing Atomic Tattoo/Judges, take a left onto North St and keep going straight till the corner of  North and Oakland, cross street and it's right behind Chubby's doughnuts.

Brady Street:
Brady Street is a great place to kill a few hours looking through vintage shops, getting gelato, and exploring the many restaurants. Take a left onto North street and then a right on Farwell Ave, keep walking until you hit Brady, take a right and begin the fun! If you don't want to walk, take the green line from corner of Oakland and North and get off on Brady.

But don't forget about all the fun events your RA has planned! We work hard to create fun events you want to attend. Is there something special you'd like to do, or a certain store you'd like to go to but don't know how to get there?
Ask me! I am more than happy to help you find your way around the big, exciting city of Milwaukee!

Meet Your Mentor

Hey everybody!

My name is Jerome Scott.  I'm originally from Chicago and I am really excited for the Bears to start the season! I will be going into my 4th year in Mechanical Engineering program and this is my second year being a mentor.  The Mobile App LCC is going to be pretty sweet.  If you haven't already downloaded it, you should do so ASAP.  Just search UWM mobile and you are good to go.  It's got a bunch of resource made to make the college life even better, so check it out.  If you couldn't tell I love technology and I can't wait to see what we come up with this year to improve on the app.  I have an okay background with programming, but I am sure that there is a lot to learn.  If anything, I can at least spread the word!

Looking forward to the year ahead!
