Historic Third Ward

Milwaukee's Historic Third Ward is full of shoppes, attractions, and as listed in the name, history.  Milwaukee's third ward is full of unique architecture influenced by the diverse groups that settled there. The historic 3rd ward has restaurants from all corners of the world and also activities are frequently held there such as Gallery Night, Sidewalk sale, sizzling Saturdays and more. The event hours and the hours of the shoppes and restaurants vary but below is a link that takes you to the official website of the Third Ward (yes there's an official website). Luckily getting to the Third Ward from campus is a simple bus ride away, The green line bus takes you directly across the street from the Third Ward, and picks up across from Cambridge Commons Residence hall on north Ave. The 30 bus line, which has a stop by all the residence halls, and the 10 also take you directly to the Third Ward. Hope to see you there!

Kenilworth Square East

Hey everyone!

One of the coolest resources Peck School of the Arts students have is Kenilworth Square East (also known as KSE or simply just Kenilworth). Formerly a Model-T factory, this massive space now houses studios, classrooms, and performance spaces for a variety of our arts majors.

On the first level of the building is INOVA (Institute of Visual Arts). The next exhibition will be open from October 5th to December 9th and will feature the 2011 Greater Milwaukee Foundation Mary L. Nohl Fellows, and will be it's 9th annual occurrence!

To get into the building (with the exception of INOVA which is open to the public), students will need to use their hand scans. Peck School students can get this access by filling out a short form, where they have their hand scanned and are given a 4 digit number. Last year I worked with a guest artist, who described it as if it was "from The Matrix." This hand scan also gets you into arts buildings after they have closed.

Kenilworth Square East is located on the corner of Kenilworth and Prospect. Students can walk, take a UWM shuttle, or MCTS bus 30 to get there.

Packer Party!

Creating Your Future Packer Party!

Creating Your Future Packer Party was a blast!  The event was held in our community's social lounge. There was a lot of socializing and cheering on the Packers during the Monday night football game against the Seahawks.  We had some amazing pizza that I think everyone enjoyed.  At our Packer Party we even had few Vikings fans that came to join in the fun!

LLC Community Members filled out Interest surveys and gave suggestions for future LLC events.   This event gave the community a great opportunity to network and get to know each other a little bit more.  It was so much fun watching everyone interact with each other and building  a great community.  I look forward to more fantastic events with the Creating your Future LLC!

Spotlight on a Covanant Student

I would like to highlight one of the many students who has actively participated in events the Wisconsin Covenant LLC has hosted. Marlyatou, Marly is a first year student from Milwaukee chosen to be a part of the Wisconsin Covenant LLC. In these first few weeks here, she has been to every required and non-required event, including a Wisconsin Covenant, Leadership and Dance LLC Potluck where we played games, ate food and met other leaders in our community. I hope that she had as much fun at the events as I have had getting to know her!

As the RA of the Wisconsin Convenant LLC and a Wisconsin Covenant student myself, I love seeing my residents and fellow classmates at events and gatherings because I get excited when students like Marlyatou are active and engaged in the community. On that note, I urge all to go out and be active in the community and in housing.

Until Next Time,

RA McKenzie

Campus' Best Resource

Hey Everyone!

I hope your first few weeks of school are going well, and you’re having a great time with the architecture LLC. It was awesome to hear that so many of you made it out for the Sandcastles event last weekend.  You’re going to spend a lot of time with your fellow architecture students the next 4 years as you progress through the architecture program, and it’s great to see some of you hanging out already.  On that note, I want to get into my blog post for the month:
Utilizing Campus’ Greatest Resource: The People
As a member of the UW-Milwaukee campus, you are associating yourself with about 30,000 students and 1,600 faculty and instructors from across the globe.  Take advantage of that! Whether they are coming from outside the country or they were born and raised in Milwaukee, every student or faculty member has something to offer you in experience and perspective.  There are few majors that can and should be taking advantage of this as much as architecture.  As you are probably already beginning to realize in taking Professor Keane’s Architecture class, learning the history of architecture and how it developed over time is essential to understanding where we stand as architects in today’s society and where it will be in the next 10 years and beyond.  Get to know the people that surround you in the architecture program. You’ll be surprised with how their perspective of architecture differs from yours.  As a part of the LLC, you already have access to two great resources in Giuseppe Mazzone and Miranda Mote.  There is a reason they were chosen to teach the LLC class.
As I continue to highlight significant architects and architecture firms in my “Architect of the Week” e-mails, be on the look-out for those that are a little closer to home.  The impact of our faculty on the Milwaukee community is incredible. Many of the professors are actively connected to architecture firms and organizations in the area, and by getting to know them you are not only building your knowledge of architecture and its role in the community, but also expanding your network of connections outside of the UW-Milwaukee campus.  It never hurts to meet new people, so get to know some of the support network of students and faculty/instructors that surround you. You’ll be surprised by what you learn!

Music and Literature in the UWM Area

Hi All!

October is just around the corner and what better way to enjoy the new fall weather than with some classy books and music.

The Crossroads LLC loves to support different privately owned bookstores around the UWM area.

Located on Locust street and just a couple of blocks from UWM, Woodland Pattern Bookstore provides everyone with the ability to browse through the  specialized literature (from small and independent presses) and poetry.

The Crossroads LLC is incredibly excited to visit sometime this semester!

Leadership Retreat 2012

Leadership Retreat 2012
The Leadership Retreat was more than just a bunch of college students coming together for the weekend at Camp Minikani. The retreat was an experience that if you took advantage of your surroundings, left you refreshed.

Through the many icebreakers, students of all different background got to know each other.  You learned what you had in common with others, even with those   who lived in the same residence hall as yourself.  I had the opportunity to see my resident’s branch out and get to know tons of people.

The Leadership Retreat challenged people physically too.  Looking at the high ropes it can be very intimidating, but nerves did not get the best of anyone. They climb to the top and made their way across the rope.

The learning did not stop at the high ropes, but it continued into the classroom.  We learned about our emotional intelligence, which allowed for the future leaders to know their own personal limits. After finding where we stood emotionally, our ethics was put to the test. It showed how an ethical leader plays a crucial role in what we tolerate in our community. You had to be there to experience the growth and knowledge we received, from all the other sessions.

When the sun went down on classes, good old fashion took over. We did everything from boating to a camp fire. It was truly a bonding experience.

Do not miss out on the Leadership Retreat 2013
Knowledge, fun, and a growing experience are a terrible thing to miss out on.

Let’s keep the fun going, this is only the beginning!!

Significant People to Writing!

Hey Hey All!!!

I hope the semester is going well!  The beginning is the semester is always a stressful time but just keep in mind to take care of yourself.  Never take on too much, balance your work load and take time to relax!

But that's not what I want to talk to you about!  I want to tell you about the importance of meeting faculty members! They do more than it seems, like grading and correcting papers.  Having good writing skills will take you a long when it comes to resume writing and in the professional world.  It is always good to make connections to faculty members because they can help you build good writing skills.

I was able to do this in my first year (something everyone should do)!  This person was a TA for 3 of my classes and taught me how to be a better writer and actually think about what I am reading to form an argument about the sources.  Strong writing skills is something that takes a lifetime to fulfill- my TA still admits he makes mistakes! But working with others to see your writing from a different perspective makes it much easier.

Writing will not get easier unless you work on the skill, and the only way you can do that is to reach out. I'll admit I hate getting help on my papers and I sometimes think I have flawless writing. But let's be honest, that's no where near true.  You never see the faults in your writing until someone points it out.  John was the one that showed how to make my writing better.  I went to him more than I should but that was because I wanted to be a better writer.  He showed me that there is always something to improve on and that I need to make my own argument and put my own voice in my work.

Now, some people can do this on their own but TA's and professors are there for a reason.  John is one of the people I can count on to help with any type of paper and to give me good tips on how to write. In fact, he sent out suggestions on how to make papers better!

Writing is a tough skill to master, we work on it our entire lives and it still isn't perfect but finding someone who can help you even a little but makes it worth it! There will always be someone around to help you turn your paper into perfection!

Business and Professional Organizations!

Hey Business Panthers! For this blog I have been tasked to discuss a place of interest to our LLC. Well, instead, I wanted to highlight multiple places.

Business is a lot about networking and being apart of various communities in order to build connections. Getting involved and joining clubs and programs are great ways to not only boost your resume but also form connections that could benefit you in the future. There are many groups on campus that are related to the business community and involvement in them will prove beneficial.

Here are some student organizations that are affiliated with the Lubar School of Business here.

  • American Marketing Association
    • Website : www.amauwm.com
    • Promotes field of marketing through various activities such as speakers, volunteer events, professional meetings, and social events, regardless of major
  • Black and Gold Committee
    • Email: lsb-blackandgold@uwm.edu
    • works to enhance quality of the UWM student experience in  the Lubar School of Business. Unites student, faculty, and staff to work towards goals.
  • Collegiate Entrepreneurs Organization
    • Email: prhealy@uwm.edu
    • works with any major to expand experience and  opportunities beyond what students receive from classes.
  • Future Healthcare executives
    • Email: fhexecs@uwm.edu
    • Works to advance members in healthcare management through high ethical standards, pertinent knowledge, and a relevant program.
  • Society of Human Resources Management
    • Email: uwm-shrm@uwm.edu
    • works to promote unlimited education, advance professional growth, develop leadership skills, and network with Human Resources Professionals
I hope these suggestions were helpful. You can also find more at uwm.orgsync.com/uwmorgs

Until Next time,

Kotsche Center

      Hey everyone!

It is now the third week of classes and you are probably getting into a routine of things. This also means that homework is staring to pile up and might be starting to get a little stressed. It is a great idea to head to the gym to relieve some of that stress :) The Klotsche Center has a lot of offer and is right here on campus. We have 4 basketball courts, a weight room, cardio room, 1/8 mile suspended track, racket ball  courts, and an olympic size swimming pool! We also offer group X classes like Zumba, core crunch, boot camp, etc... Below I have attached a link to the calendar of the Group X classes offered with times and what the classes are. The normal hours of Klotsche are Mon-Thurs: 6am-10pm, Friday: 6am-8pm, Saturday 10am-8pm, and Sunday 10am-10pm. The swimming pook hours can be found on the Sports and Recreation website.

Exploring Milwaukee: Yo Factory

https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiyJeEgQW7Rc6X56XwQAYxlfk-uRsrOiu8VMUAofW3ujY94YosScgeQD9a_VNINh32WKIOOG0DPlVY5QLHUbqQmXwWx0TsMjd8GxxGJfW6CCPNHOPSkp8b7J-DR08yeEA-yC0pG9h4Fnrf7/s1600/389222_273602449404335_824165293_n.jpgThis month I wanted to highlight a personal favorite that I was introduced to last year. Yo Factory aka Fro Yo is a amazing little place down on N. Farwell ave. not to far from Kenilworth apartments. I found it to be a great place to go to and get away from campus for a bit and to enjoy some frozen yogurt that taste a lot like ice cream. Not only is it great, but its also a healthier treat for all of you sweet toothed residents. Being apart of the Helping Hands in Healthcare LLC I found it interesting when I went into Yo Factory that they had facts on why frozen yogurt was much healthier for you and what it can do for your health in the long run. So how does the place work? First, you start with adding a flavor of frozen yogurt of your choice to a bowl. Next you make your way around a toppings bar of maybe 20 items from fruits to candy treats. Finally, your total is based off the weight of your bowl. At .45 cents an oz its quite the steal.

Their hours are, Mon-Sat 11 a.m.-11 p.m.; Sun 11 a.m.-10 p.m. and they are located at 2203 N. Farwell Ave. The easiest way to get there in my opinion would be to take the shuttle to Kenilworth and from there walk to Fro Yo just down the street.

event

The key to a successful college experience is making successful contacts and the best way to do that is through events.

Image notes by Dan Heim http://heimhenge.com
I really enjoyed the planetarium event last spring.  Being in the city is exciting, but it blots out your experience of nature.  The planetarium provides a great way to understand a country night by seeing the stars that are lost to the city lights.
There are also a few bits of Egyptian and Greek history and mythology that are interesting.  It's like a museum of the sky and space.
Though the planetarium is not quite Nova, and there's no Pink Floyd laser light show, it still makes for a great way to relax for an hour on a Monday night.

It was a life changing experience, and one that I will not soon forget.

An Awesome Place with a Mission

Hello Business Panthers,

Michael Ameel here, just checking in with you! I hope your transition to UWM has been stress-free! (Knock on wood!) When I was a first year student living in RiverView Residence Hall I really was looking for something to do, something that could benefit me, the UWM community, and the city of Milwaukee! Walking through the Student Union I noticed a small little office (which has now been renovated) that had a display that said something along the lines of "Apply now as a 'Big' for Big Brother Big Sisters" and I walked in and chatted with the friendly staff of the Center for Volunteerism and Student Leadership.
I suggest for my Business Panthers floors 9-12 to head into the CVSL in the Union room G28, and talk with someone about getting involved! I got involved with Big Brothers Big Sisters and had a wonderful time! Not only did I enjoy hanging with my 'Little' but interacting with other UWM students who wanted to make a difference to the UWM community and the city of Milwaukee.
A neat thing about the CVSL is that they have a Student Service Record Program where students can sign up and keep track of their hours of volunteered work and when you graduate you'll have  something added to your transcript so employers can see that you went above and beyond!
With that I leave you with an option to explore the wonderful services of the Center for Volunteerism and Student Leadership. I am here to plant the seed and for you to water that seed and watch (you) grow into a bright scholar that goes above and beyond!

"The mission of the Center for Volunteerism & Student Leadership (CVSL) is to foster an ethic of service and leadership within the UW-Milwaukee campus community by promoting and supporting volunteerism that addresses human and social needs." ~CVSL website

Check out Zelazo!

A cool place the Music LLC students should check out is Zelazo (Helene Zelazo Center for the Performing Arts)!!!! Although Zelazo is now a performing arts center, it was once used as a synagogue and to this day you can still see the BEAUTIFUL stained glass windows inside Bader Hall (a concert hall).

Things Zelazo offers:

-Amazing concerts
-Practice/warmup spaces
-box office (so students can get tickets to attend those fantastic concerts!)
-hand scans for access into music/theatre buildings after hours
-Some dance classes are located in Zelazo too!

Box office hours: Monday - Friday, 12pm - 4pm and prior to performances

Zelazo is located across from the union. The address is...
2419 East Kenwood Boulevard, Milwaukee, WI

I know it seems like common sense to check out Zelazo, but many students never make it over there until the night of their first concert. Zelazo has so many fun and exciting opportunities. So, check the concert dates, grab a few friends, and head on over to enjoy a night of excellent music!

Travel Milwaukee: Milwaukee Public Market

I'm sure by the third week of classes you have all come to the realization that there is a never ending amount of sites and things to do within the fine city of Milwaukee. As future healthcare professionals, I think it's important that you are aware of one of Milwaukee's most notable and unique restaurants/markets (and healthiest, too). The Milwaukee Public Market, located in the city's Historic Third Ward, offers visitors high quality and delicious ethnic and artisan products, along with other freshly prepared foods. The market itself is constituted of local, independent food merchants. If you don't feel like picking up a few fresh items at the market, you can bring a few friends and have breakfast, lunch, or dinner at one of their restaurant options. If you're up for a fresh, custom salad, check out The Green Kitchen. In the mood for European food? Check out the Benelux Grand Cafe and market. There are several other options including a sushi bar, cheese and sausage shop, and many more that you can explore for yourself!

The Milwaukee Public Market is located in the city's Historic Third Ward at 401 N. Water Street. Their hours are Monday-Friday 10 a.m.-8 p.m., Saturday 8 a.m.-7 p.m., and Sunday 10 a.m.-6 p.m. You can utilize your UPass and take route 30 (Green Line) to get to the Milwaukee Public Market. I hope you'll find time during your first year in Milwaukee to visit this tremendous destination!

All Majors Career Day

Hey! I hope your first few weeks of classes have gone well!

I'm assuming that most of you came to college to eventually be able to pursue a career that you are passionate about. College is a learning experience both inside and outside the classroom. It is a time to grow and experience new things. It is also never too early to start building your resume!

The All Major's Career Day is coming up on October 4th from 10:00am-2:00pm in the Union Ballroom. I definitely recommend printing out a few resumes and stopping by! It's a great opportunity for you to see what kind of jobs are out there and maybe even land an internship or a part-time position. This career day is slightly less formal than the Lubar School of Business Career Fair in February, which caters to business students only. I would suggest dressing in business casual and bringing a folder with about 10 resumes.

Even if you are not looking for a position at the moment, I recommend stopping by just to browse and introduce yourself to a few people. That way, when the Business Career Fair comes up in February you will know what to expect and feel more comfortable.

Hope to see you there!

Brian

P.S. Check out the Career Development Website for some great career assessments and information about possible careers (what they pay and how to get there).

Also, don't forget the Career Services office in Lubar that is only available to business students!

McNair Reasearch Conference

Hello everyone:)

I hope you all had a lovely first week of school! I'm sure you all had a great time during Fall Welcome and Pantherfest!

Well, I stumbled upon a very awesome event that I would love to go to and I highly recommend you all to look into as well. It's called The Annual National McNair Research Conference and Graduate Fair. It is a weekend long conference that takes place at the Grand Geneva Resort on Novemeber 9-11 this year. Although this particular event does not take place on campus, UWM has been sponsoring this event for the past 21 years.
A little background about this conference is that it is designed specifically for undergraduate students to enhance their interest in graduate studies. At the conference, you will have the opportunity to talk to representatives from more than 50 of the nation's top grad schools, build your networks, attend workshops designed for students interested in graduate studies, and listen to presentations of McNair scholars from all over the country. Since you all are "lab rats" and are interested in getting into research, grad school, and/or pre-professional school, this conference would help you figure out which schools you would want to apply to as well as give you the chance to speak with those schools personally. And, on top of all that good stuff, according to the schedule, there is karaoke and a dance party with a DJ! Fun stuff for sure!

If you are interested in attending this conference this year, or in your future years at UWM, here is a link to the Conference:
http://www.graduateschool.uwm.edu/research/spectrum/undergraduate/mcnair/conference/.

There is more information as well as the contact person on that website for you all.

Also, I'm not sure how many of you actually remembered to look up the Road Kill Experiement Nigel talked about during our first class.

If you forgot, well here you go:)

Business Panthers Get Social

Hello Lovely Readers,

For those of you following Business Panther RA John's blog, it will come as no surprise to you when I tell you that Business Panthers will be attending a resume workshop this Friday, September 14th. Instead of reiterating the amazing details regarding this event, I would like to review a more recent event hosted by the entire NoLo (North Lowers, Floors 1-12) staff.

Some NoLo staff @ the beach

On Saturday, September 8th, NoLo took a trip to the beach in the afternoon. This was followed by an ice cream social in the evening. While some residents chose to stay in due to the chilly winds, others threw on their windbreakers and took to the sand. Not only did residents get to enjoy some athletic sand endeavors, they also got to learn how to use the Milwaukee County Transit System.

Later in the afternoon the ice cream social stole the show with an amazing turnout! Residents had to walk down the tower starting on floor 12 to receive a fully loaded bowl of ice cream. Floor 9/10 proved to be a challenge. Students were required to rap, dance, trust fall, "cook", and compliment the wonderful RAs of the floor in order to receive their syrup delights.

Both events were filled with smiles. The Business Panthers are off to a great start!! The fun, games, excitement, and learning have only just begun. As the year moves forward, our experiences and companionship as a community will only continue to grow.

Business Panthers Pride,

Charnelle

Meet Kaho from the Transfer LLC

During the last week the transfer residents have taken the opportunity to get to know one another through activities on their own or through Fall Welcome events.  If they are not out of the building you can usually find people hanging out in the lounge watching T.V., playing games or just chatting.
It has been really fun getting to know everyone because they each bring something different to the community.  Someone that I got to know pretty well was Kaho Sonohara who transferred here from Japan.  Kaho is currently studying music here at UWM and audition for the program through playing a classical piano piece.  She is the oldest of three with a younger sister and brother.  Kaho is looking forward to visiting the great city of Chicago while she is here and enjoys listening to the musical artist Yui. (The picture above)
Through Kaho people can learn that everyone has different perspective of the world and by looking at others perspectives you can gain a understanding about your own state or country.   Also in college is where you meet a variety of new people, who you will create lasting friendships with.

Healthcare LLC Tie Dye Party

TIE DYE T-SHIRT PARTY!
*Disclaimer: Not to be confused with a wet t-shirt contest*

As an entire Helping Hands in Healthcare LLC, we are going to have a Tie Dye Party in order to allow residents to meet fellow LLC members, RAs, mentors and professional staff members. We also want to take pride in our LLC and wear our "matching" tie dye shirts around campus!

This event will take place on Thursday, September 13 at 6pm on the Sandburg Lawn.

Hopefully after this event people will be more familiar with everyone involved in the LLC.

More to come….

Business Panthers Resume Workshop

Hello again,

The Business Panthers LLC is hosting a resume workshop this on September 14th!  It will be in Lubar Hall room N440.  Renee Smith,  a career adviser for Lubar, will be sharing her knowledge of resumes, both how to create and edit them.   It will be roughly an hour and a half long starting at 3 PM.  We hope that this workshop will help prepare residents for the real world, and give them a jump start on their peers!  The event will focus mainly on how to create an effective resume and what to put on it.  That said, it is also a great opportunity to meet some new friends in the residence halls!  One last thing, about the workshop, Renee will be available after for questions!

Have a good day,

John Thornton

Check out this cool event coming up!

Hello Everybody,

I hope the week went well for everyone!  The first week can be a tough one at times so do what you can.  :D

On Monday, September 25 from 4-5 the SSC will be holding a scavenger hunt event that takes a look at different offices that can help you plant around your academic success.  There will be a riddle that you have to solve in order for you to find the various resources on campus.  Once you complete the "hunt" there will be a post game recap with mentor in the SSC and light refreshments will be provided. This event does a great job of connecting you to everything that the campus can do for you, just like your residence hall.   I hope to see you guy there, and remember to meet us at the SSC to pick up your clues.

Have an awesome day,

Jerome Scott

LLC Potluck Dinner

Saturday September 8th students from the Community Leadership, WI Covenant and Dance LLC attended a potluck dinner at Kenilworth Square Apartments. BBQ chicken, soda, salad, cupcakes, cookies, iced tea and carrots and chips were served. This was a great way to end everyone's first week of school. It was also a great way for the students from all 3 LLCs that I mentor to get to know one another.

After eating we all talked about PantherFest, joining student organizations and played a round of Skip-Bo. Within the next week Dance LLC students will be going on a trip to downtown Milwaukee for a dance performance from Wild Space Dance Co. and all students this weekend will be attending the Leadership Retreat at Camp Minikani!

Wild Space!

Wild Space Dance Company is known for doing site-specific dances.  This means that a dance is choreographed just for the area that it is performed in.
Both Dance LLC classes will be attending this unusual performance on Thursday September 20.  The performance will give a new view to Contemporary dance.  Their stage is lite with car headlights as the performers dance on the three levels of the Milwaukee Brewery parking structure.  The company is taking dance to three new heights!
This performance will give students a new view on dance.  Students can write their class required performance while having their dance knowledge expanded.  This unique dance will provide new definitions of dance to students.  It is a great learning experience to broaden their dance knowledge on a form of dance that many of them are not all that familiar with.
