ASL: Snow Days & Drag Show

The ASL LLC has been amazing the past few weeks. The semester started off a little rough with 4 snow days. We had a lot of free time to hang out and catch up after winter break but the following weeks were quite stressful trying to catch up on our all of the make-up work. Once classes finally started for real some of the residents mentioned that they really noticed the benefits of living in the ASL LLC. Many people commented on how much ASL they already knew and how much easier their ASL class was because they were ahead of their classmates. I was so excited to hear that they really enjoyed living on the floor AND they were learning and getting something out of the experience as well.
One of the most exciting things that happened, at least for me, was the UWM Drag Show. We were able to get reserved seats behind the interpreter section. The future interpreters on our floor had a great time learning a different style of interpreting. So far they have really only seen classroom and community interpreters so it was a new experience to see a show interpreter in action. ASL is a visual language and based on the content of the Drag Show there were a few interesting moments where knowing a visual language become pretty interesting. Based on what has happened so far this semester I cannot wait to see what the rest of the school year has to offer.
