Person of Interest: Fred Hemke

Recently, the Music LLC went to a saxophone studio concert featuring UW-Milwaukee Alumni, Fred Hemke. Hemke's contributions have greatly impacted the music community. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in music education from UWM in 1958 and went on to get his Master of Music degree from the University of Rochester in 1962, and his doctoral of musical arts from UW-Madison in 1975. Before Hemke retired, he taught at Northwestern University as the professor of saxophone for 50 years.

He taught students that the music isn't just about the performer, it is about the music itself. You cannot personalize the music until you have executed the composer's intent. The level of talent he has attained is the level that performers should strive for. In his eighties, he is still just as good of a performer than he has ever been.
